Kevin's Obituary

HARRINGTON, KEVIN DEAN, 53, died unexpectedly in his sleep on June 16th, 2006 in Hallandale Beach, Florida. Kevin was born in Schenectady, New York, on November 21, 1952. He was the second son of Dean Butler Harrington and Barbara Jean Stibbe Harrington. His childhood was spent living in Ballston Lake, New York, while attending Burnt Hills Ballston Lake Schools, graduating in 1971. After graduation he attended the Schenectady County Community College. In 1974, Kevin attended SUNY Plattsburg, New York and in 1978, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in General Studies with emphasis on philosophy and psychology. He became impassioned with his study of philosophy and the knowledge he gained from reading books. This interest drove him for the rest of his life; he had found his niche. After living a few years near Scotia, New York, Kevin moved to Florida in 1983 where he lived for the past 23 years. He spent his last nine years as a bookseller for the Barnes and Noble bookstore in Aventura. This gave him daily the joy he found in talking with those interested in obtaining knowledge from books and helping find the perfect books for each customer. Kevin enjoyed a variety of music including The Beatles, King Crimson, Enya and Vangelis O. Papathannassiou. He also enjoyed classical music especially by the composers Mahler, Wagner and Mozart. Kevin recently developed a taste for Blue Grass. In about 1992, he began a collection of his own thoughts and after three years authored his own book of philosophy in the form of creative epigrams which he named "A Post-Scientific Mythology." This was copyrighted in 1995 and registered in the Library of Congress. The first of the several hundred epigrams in his book reads as follows: "Beauty is the highest manifestation of intelligence, the highest manifestation of beauty is love." Kevin is survived by his parents and two brothers and their families; one brother, Kim McKee Harrington, and wife Cynthia, live in Orlando, Florida, as do their daughter Laura, their two sons and their families, Douglas and wife Carrie and their two daughters, Victoria and Peyton; James and wife Taja and their daughter Jalen and son Talon. Another brother, Jeffrey Lee Harrington, and wife Kathleen live in Atlanta, Georgia, as do their three children, Melissa, Thomas, and Daniel and his wife Lacey and their son, Levi. Kevin was fortunate to have made many friends in Florida. Therefore a memorial service was held for them and Kevin's family in Hallandale Beach on June 24, 2006. A graveside memorial service for Kevin's family will be held at Underwood Cemetery near Chestertown, New York in September, where his maternal grandparents and forebears are buried. Kevin will be greatly missed by all his family and all who knew him. He will be remembered as a gentle, kind, intelligent, sensitive and a thoughtful philosophical and fun-loving person with wide interests. He was generous and very helpful to many persons who were experiencing difficult personal situations. He was a talented artist, poet and author. Kevin was a spiritual person, a loving son and a child of God. For those who would like to participate in a memorial to Kevin, the family suggests the scholarship set up in his memory at SUNY Plattsburgh where Kevin received his formal education. The Kevin Dean Harrington '78 Memorial Scholarship in Philosophy c/o The Plattsburgh College Foundation, 101 Broad Street, Plattsburgh, NY 12901. Funeral arrangements were made by Joseph Scarano Funeral Home of Hallandale, Florida, and by Townley & Wheeler of Ballston Lake, New York.
